How I discovered HypnoBirthing

When I first heard of HypnoBirthing, it was during my first pregnancy and someone mentioned it in an online Islamic forum I was in. She said it was haram (not allowed in Islam). I was a little curious, but I didn't explore further as I had already signed up for independent childbirth classes with Choices in Childbirth in Melbourne. When I got back to Malaysia and read up more about HypnoBirthing mostly from Soo Wai Han's website, I reflected on my birth experience and realized that indeed I was under hypnosis. I was doing my Childbirth Education course with Childbirth International at the time, so I didn't pursue HypnoBirthing any further.

After I birthed my second child unassisted at home, Wai Han and I became close friends as we discovered we shared the same passion for childbirth. She urged me to take the practitioner course so that I could give classes. At first I was hesitant because I wasn't sure if it was allowed Islamically. However I checked with a trusted Ustaz and he said that if it helps people it is generally allowed. And so I registered myself ...Best decision I ever made! The course taught me, in many ways, things that I ALREADY KNEW, but couldn't quite put a finger on or access easily. The principles are so simple and basic, yet we tend to overlook them. Now I use HypnoBirthing techniques in my everyday life and use the principles in any situation.

Here's a great article (albeit slightly old one) in TIME about HypnoBirthing. http://www.time.com/time/connections/article/0,9171,1101040301-593553,00.html

Hi. Thanks for the birth stories. I'm 4 months pregnant w my first baby and already can't stand intrusiveness from other ppl, so hypnobirthing sounds right for me. I don't think I'm ready for a home birth yet but will be giving birth in SDMC Subang - do u know if they are generally pushy when it comes to birth? You could reply to my email if you like.

Thanks.

Hi d, Congrats on your pregnancy!
Well I've heard mixed reviews about SDMC Subang. There is currently no doctor that stands out from the crowd as being supportive of natural birth at SDMC. Most of them fall in the middle where they are neither too enthusiastic nor too opposed natural birth.
Also SDMC is not a BFHI (Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative) Hospital, so in terms of the immediate post partum period and immediate newborn care such as having a lactation consultant on site, providing breastfeeding support, rooming-in, etc, the hospital has not committed itself to a certain standard of care that other BFHI hospitals have.

But as always, the pregnant mother is the consumer and its always good to exercise our rights as a consumer and request for certain things that we want. Otherwise the state of maternity care in this country will never change. Preparation and education is certainly key in this aspect.

Good luck in your journey! And let me know how it goes :)

Hi,
currently my wife is 7 month pregnant and planning to giving birth in KPJ Shah Alam Selangor or SALAM Hospital (Shah Alam). Do you have reviews about them..- do u know if they are generally pushy when it comes to birth? are they being supportive of natural birth or BFHI?

You could reply to my email if you like.
