“A woman in birth
This collection of birth stories is put together thanks to the mothers and fathers who wanted to share their moments of empowerment, faith, love and triumph in bringing their babies into the world. I have divided it into a few segments - hospital, unassisted, unplanned unassisted - for ease of navigation.
This does not mean that a hospital birth is any less empowering than a homebirth. I birthed my first daughter in a hospital and it was THE most empowering and positive day of my life. Many women find a homebirth more sacred, empowering and comfortable - for various reasons - but they should also realize that unassisted birth comes with it a greater risk of mortality and there is no scientific research to back up the safety of unassisted birth. What's most important is that the father and mother take responsibility for the decisions that are made in their birth - be it at home or hospital.
In Malaysia, there is no viable, practical option to birth at home with a midwife, although more and more educated parents are seeking for alternatives to hospital births. Unfortunately parents are faced with very little choice and so many find themselves having to choose between a medicalized hospital birth or an unassisted birth (birth without a skilled medical professional). This is why I believe my advocacy work with the authorities, doctors and midwives via The Gentle Birthing Group is so important. Malaysian parents should be provided with safe viable options apart from hospital births - and they should NEVER have to be forced into unassisted birth simply because there is no other alternative.
Special thanks to all the mothers and fathers who have shared their birth stories for the benefit and inspiration of others. I continue to be humbled and awed by your strength, love and dedication to your babies and your families. May Allah swt reward you and bless you with loving and righteous children. Ameen.
